Airport plans for new roads for 2012

PLANS to build new roads at Luton Airport to ease traffic during and after the 2012 Olympics were announced on Tuesday (November 2).

The airport plans to construct two new traffic lanes to the south of Airport Way, through the existing underpass to the new set-down system in the Central Terminal Area.

Details and images of the plan have been submitted to Luton Borough Council for approval.

Managing director of Luton airport Glyn Jones said: “This is an important part of improving the travel experience of all our passengers, including the many visitors to the Olympic Games who we are expecting to pass through the airport next year.”

The plans will also relieve traffic congestion en-route to the airport along the East Luton corridor via the A1081.

The Mayor of London recently announced that Luton Airport would be one of 35 locations to host Olympic London Ambassadors.

The airport’s close proximity to London makes it one of the fastest and most convenient ways to travel to the Games and the new plans are an important part of preparing the airport for the Olympics.

The airport is now the fifth largest in the UK, attracting nearly 10 million passengers a year.

Attila Dankovics, head of marketing, sales and communications at Wizz Air, said “As the largest low cost carrier between London and Central and Eastern Europe, we expect air travel to increase during the Games, so we welcome the plans to improve access for our passengers heading to London Luton in 2012.”

The airport is preparing for the arrival of VIPs, dignitaries and many of the Games’ sponsors using private jet operators as well as spectators.
