At your service . . .

MORE than 100 volunteers – including super heavyweight Lithuanian boxer Marius Sperauskas – took part in Hindu sewa at Keech Hospice Care on Sunday.

Om Group sewa co-ordinator Ravi Shah, 24, explained: “Sewa means selfless service.

“It was launched as a national event last year and has really escalated.

“It’s now an international day of volunteering with more than 15 countries taking part in this wonderful concept.”

A group of 21 supporters visited the hospice last year to offer sewa and Ravi was overwhelmed by the turnout this year.

He said: “It was mind blowing to see so many volunteers from so many different backgrounds working together with love, passion and determination.

“They ranged in age from six to 68 and completed a variety of tasks. These included painting the therapy rooms to give them a more relaxing and soothing effect and lots of gardening to create a cleaner environment.”

Volunteers also tidied three large sheds and did a stock take, washed staff cars and read to young patients.

Ravi added: “We experienced a real feelgood factor when we completed our projects and realised the impact they would have on hospice patients. It’s satisfying to know we can change lives through humble service.

“That is what true sewa is all about. ”
