A documentary featuring Bedfordshire University’s organ donation research has won Best Documentary Film Award at the Woodpecker International Film Festival.
To Give or Not to Give features the university’s Institute for Health Research director, Professor Gurch Randhawa.
The film highlights the shortage of organ donors in the country and focuses on a Catholic priest, Father Davis Chiramel, who donated one of his kidneys to a Hindu man from a poor background. This selfless act led to more than 100,000 Indian Catholics signing up to India’s organ donation register.
Professor Randhawa was in India training staff when he was asked to take part in the documentary.
Father Chiramel said: “I had read how he recommended and devised public campaigns at grass roots level for organ donation and knew he would help me make this documentary.”
Professor Randhawa said: “I’m thrilled the film has gained such recognition as it will serve as a catalyst to inspire more people to to discuss organ donation.”
