Call for calm following smoke alarm reports

FOLLOWING media coverage that Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was replacing smoke alarms that it had issued to householders because of reports that some of the alarms had developed faults as a result of tampering, Fire Chiefs in Bedfordshire have urged local residents not to panic.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Glen Ranger said that residents in Bedfordshire who had been provided with Fire Angel smoke alarms by the Fire and Rescue Service should have nothing to be concerned about.

He said: “The smoke alarms that we have issued to local householders are from a later batch than those that were reported to have had problems, as a result of tampering.”

“When we issue a smoke alarm we provide useful maintenance tips for householders to ensure that the smoke alarm works effectively.

“Smoke alarms save lives! And householders are reminded that they should never dismantle or tamper with their smoke detector.

“If any householders do have concerns, the Fire Angel helpline details are printed on the packaging and booklet that accompanies the smoke alarms that we have issued (For people who are concerned and can’t find the contact details for Fire Angel, they are: 0800-1412561 or [email protected]).”

Glen Ranger added: “If people living in Bedfordshire are concerned and want to speak with their local Fire and Rescue Service, they can contact us on 0800 043 5047.”
