Care to join us from John O’Groats to Lands End?

CYSTIC fibrosis sufferer Simon Stothard has to have twice-daily physio sessions to help clear his lungs.

But nothing has ever stopped the dynamic Dunstablian from taking part in numerous punishing charity challenges.

Now he’s hoping to beat one of his own records by cycling the 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End in nine days with his friend Del Wood.

And the pedal-mad pair are hoping other cycling enthusiasts will join them on the journey or provide back-up.

Simon said: “This will be an extra personal challenge for me as I’ve done the distance before in 10 days.”

The 28-year-old Luton Borough Council information officer is something of a legend in Bedfordshire charity and cystic fibrosis circles.

He’s taken part in five marathons, climbed Ben Nevis twice and cycled from England to Germany.

He intends doing four half marathons between now and June, starting with the Bedford event on December 11.

Training has to fit round his condition. Apart from physio, he uses a nebulisor to alleviate the sticky mucus on his lungs which makes breathing difficult.

But he admitted: “It’s the running and cycling which keep me really fit.”

Simon (on left) of Langdale Road has raised more than £20,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the only national charity dealing with all aspects of the disease.
