Stray Cat Rescue, a charity based in Tingrith, ordered new outdoor pens for the abandoned cats from the company and paid a deposit of £1,400.

They used money left to them by one of their volunteers who died last year.

Volunteer Bev Faulkner said: “We ordered a new set of pens and because we were having them made to our specification we paid a £1,400 deposit. Two or three days after the company cashed the cheque, they went into liquidation. We don’t have a credit card because we are a charity, so the chances are we’ve lost our money.”

Bev doesn’t want to name the company, but says the charity has used it before.

She said: “The money was left to us by Sue Lang who did our fundraising for years. She passed away last year and left us this legacy. She did so much for us and is awfully missed which makes it even sadder that the money has been lost. That’s a lot of money for us. It’s very sad and disappointing.”
