Celebrating 45 years service

WHEN the Samaritans first opened their doors in Luton, they were the only telephone helpline available.

Now, 45 years later, they’re one of more than 3,000 across the UK.

Director Marilyn Gearing said: “We were really pioneers.

“We take 30,000 calls every year. Many are about relationships – not just partners but parents, children and friends.

“And more and more are concerned with job prospects and debt problems.”

The team celebrated their 45th anniversary with a birthday bash to which former and current volunteers were invited.
