Celebrating Queen's 90th with tea party

A group of 58 Luton senior citizens, aged between 74 and 99, had the time of their lives when they were invited to afternoon tea at Wigmore Primary School to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.

They sang along to all the old songs – courtesy of Luton & Dunstable Hospital Radio – some got up and boogied with Luton Air Cadets who were on hand to help, and almost all stood straight-ish and proud to join in the national anthem.

But first they tucked into a terrifc spread laid on by Asda – a selection of sandwiches, vol-au-vents, pork pies and sausage rolls, followed by Victoria sponge cake, scones with jam and cream and strawberries and cream.

One octogenarian said: “I had a wonderful time and won’t need to eat for a week.”

Age Concern Luton chief executive Colette McKeaveney said: “It was great fun for the guests and helpers and terrific to have so many organisations and volunteers pulling together to make it a truly memorable day.”
