Charity: Mencap searches for a campaign star

Learning disability charity Mencap has launched a nationwide competition to find individuals with a learning disability to front a new advertising campaign for its support services.

The charity is inviting people in south east England to audition to star in its New Year, New Me advertising campaign by submitting a short film or a photo explaining what they hope to achieve in 2012.

Entrants with the most inspiring and creative ideas will get to be the voice and face of the new advertising campaign, which will appear in print publications and on radio stations across the country in the New Year.

The winners will also get the opportunity to meet Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall, who will be releasing his first album on December 12th and will also be performing at the Royal Variety Show that month. The former learning disability support worker is backing the campaign and will also take part in the judging process.

The competition is part of a campaign to encourage people with a learning disability and their families to focus on goals to make meaningful changes to their lives.

Jai McDowall said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the winners of the New year, new me competition and helping people with a learning disability make positive changes to their life.

“Making New Year’s resolutions and personal goals are a great way to make lasting change to your life and can help others as well.”

The charity’s Andrew Crammond said: “The competition will be a fantastic opportunity for someone from the south east with a learning disability to star in a national advertising campaign.

“The competition will also challenge and inspire people with a learning disability, who face greater challenges in life and often need extra support with planning, to set themselves personal goals and make a positive difference to their life and those of their friends and family.

“Mencap already supports thousands of people with a learning disability to achieve both the ordinary and the extraordinary. I hope that this competition will really get people thinking about something that they’d really like to achieve.”

The closing date for the competition is Friday, December 2. Winners will be announced in December.
