Distraction theft by bogus police officers

During the first incidentbetween 10am and midday on Thursday (May 5) an elderly victim answered the door to two men who pushed past her, claiming to be police officers.

The offenders are described as white, slim, around 5ft 8ins, and in their early 20s, with short light brown hair and local accents.

They were wearing open shirts with T-shirts underneath, and one was wearing a hi-vis jacket.

The pair made off with a purse containing money.

Det Con Rachel Lydon, investigating, said: “To this brave victim’s credit she challenged these heartless offenders to show their police ID. Unsurprisingly they did not show any identification.

“I would urge all residents, and in particular the elderly or vulnerable, not to open to the door to strangers unless it is a pre-arranged visit or someone you recognise, and to call 999 if you suspect a burglar is in your home. Police would never enter your home in this way and certainly would never ask you to part with any belongings or cash.

“Our message is if you aren’t sure, don’t answer the door.

“Unfortunately we tend to see a rise in this type offence across the county during this time of year, so if you have an elderly or vulnerable friend, relative or neighbour, please help us by passing on this advice.”

Police also continue to investigate a similar offence which took place in Lullington Close on Monday, April 30.

In this distraction, the offenders convinced the homeowner they were plumbers checking a water leak. As one of the duo pretended to fix a pipe under the sink, the other stole cash from another room.

The men were described as being of Asian appearance and slim. Both spoke with English accents and wore dark clothing. One was thought to be around 15 years old, 5ft tall, and wearing a bobble hat, while the other was in his mid-20s and was around 5ft 7ins.
