Detectives from the Met Police’s counter terrorism command arrested Bednarczyk at his home on December 11 last year, after they identified him as someone who bought suspicious items from the internet.

A search of his address recovered instructions for making gunpowder and C4 plastic explosive, as well as a number of ingredients for making explosive devices. However, no terrorist-related activity, or imminent threat, was discovered.

Bednarczyk was subsequently charged with eight indictments and remanded. He pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, May 6, to the offences and was remanded in custody, ahead of sentencing.

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met's counter terrorism command, said: “I am very pleased with this sentence. Thanks to the vigilance of Counter Terrorism officers, we detected Bednarczyk’s illegal and dangerous activity and brought him to justice. He now faces a substantial time in prison.

“Every day the national counter terrorism police network is fighting terrorism. However, police also rely on information from the public and I urge everyone to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious at all to police whether they see it online or in the real world.”
