Luton teen charged with GBH after carnival day riot

Beds Police says it is conducting a 'thorough and robust' probe into the unrest

At around 8.15pm on Sunday night a huge brawl erupted in St George’s Square, during which bottles were thrown and four people were stabbed.

As riot police with batons stepped in to break up the violence running battles between crowds of people spiralled out of control.

Footage from the incident shows rioters throwing missiles and threatening officers with weapons.

On Tuesday police and crime commissioner Kathryn Holloway said that of the nine who were arrested after the unrest, eight are from Luton.

One of those detained was Nathan Kiasala, 19, of Styles Close, Luton, who has been charged with violent disorder, possession of an offensive weapon and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Another teen from Luton – Daniel Idiabeta, 18, of Oakley Road – has been charged with violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Both men appeared before Luton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning and have been remanded pending a further court date.

A Beds Police spokesperson told the Herald & Post: “The events of Sunday involved a number of people and Bedfordshire Police is continuing a thorough and robust investigation.

“Officers investigating the disorder are keen to hear from anyone with information, or who may have been involved, and they are urged to call 101 quoting Operation Leopold.”
