Sent to prison for carrying a machete

A man has been sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of carrying a machete.

Pernel Taylor, 26, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to carrying a bladed article at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday and was handed the six-month jail sentence.

He is currently in prison serving a two-year jail sentence for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

The offence happened on Saturday, August 15 last year when police were called to a large scale disorder in George Street West, Luton. The Boson team at Bedfordshire Police were able to identify Taylor carrying the machete during the disorder using CCTV and DNA evidence was obtained to link him to the dangerous weapon.

Det Con Ian Williams said: “It was lucky that no one was seriously injured in this disturbance, Taylor’s actions could have had much graver consequences. Nothing good ever comes from carrying knives - it will only result in individuals being seriously or fatally injured, or arrested and imprisonment. The possession of a weapon will only cause any situation to escalate – with possibly fatal consequences.”
