A video purportedly of the incident has been shared online, in which an officer is spotted knocked down on the pavement while apparently being attacked.

Emma Carter, general secretary of the Bedfordshire Police Federation, tweeted: "We are aware of a video of an incident in Luton. Yet again, this shows the dangers officers face and the bravery they show every day in keeping the public safe.

"Our colleague has minor injuries but it could have been much worse. We are not society's punchbags. The dangers are stark."
