Two taken to hospital after riot after Luton carnival
Five people have been arrested and investigations are continuing following disorder in Luton town centre on Sunday evening.
The disorder broke out at approximately 8.15pm following the Luton Carnival, and has now been contained.
A large number of officers were dispatched to help contain the violence and two people were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Chief Superintendent David Boyle said: “It is disappointing that after a fantastic day of celebrations during Luton Carnival, we have seen a small minority of people causing ugly scenes across the town centre.
“This behaviour will absolutely not be tolerated and we have launched an investigation to ensure that all those responsible are identified and justice is brought against them.
“The Carnival itself passed peacefully and safely, as it has done for several years, and it is completely unacceptable that some people have attempted to ruin that.
“Thanks to the hard work of our officers on duty tonight, and the support from our neighbouring forces, the ambulance service, the fire service, and Luton Borough Council, we have been able to contain the violence and order has been restored.
“We would like to reassure the public that we are taking the events of this evening very seriously, and would appeal for anyone who witnessed the disorder to contact us so that we can help bring those responsible to justice.”
We are appealing for anyone with information, including people who took videos of the disorder, to contact us on 101.
