Demanding trek leads to DofE gold

A physically demanding expedition to Snowdonia was one of the challenges Luton Sixth Form College student Arshad Hussain had to tackle to qualify for his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

The 19-year-old of St Ethelbert’s Avenue also had to volunteer, learn a skill, get fit and take part in a week-long residential course.

He was presented with his coveted award at St James’s Palace.

Arshad said: “What I enjoyed most was the expedition to Snowdonia. We managed to navigate through the rough terrain and reach the camp site – eventually! – for a well-deserved supper.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to do something different, make new friends and take on a real challenge in a completely new environment.” He added: “ The DofE experience will help me progress in future because it has increased my self-confidence and the skills we gained can all be transferred to the work place.”

The Duke of Wessex was at the presentation ceremony.
