The theft took place on Friday February 27, when the man knocked on the door of the woman’s home in Surrey Street asking for a glass of water.
While the woman went to fetch him a glass, he stole her handbag and left. The crime happened shortly before 4pm.
Detective Constable Vicky Cunningham said: “The victim in this case was particularly vulnerable and her vulnerability has been taken advantage of in this incident.
“We’re keen to talk to anyone who may have had someone knocking on their door with a similar request, or anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident.
