Cause of Leagrave blaze unknown despite fire investigation

An investigation into the cause of a fire that closed multiple roads in Luton has not been able to reveal how it started.

High Street in Leagrave was closed for most of Wednesday (April 22) while seven fire engines tackled the blaze affecting a bungalow, including the garden, garage and roof area.

The fire service, which was called to the property at around 10.34am, said that a number of gas cylinders were on the property.

Witnesses reported seeing fireballs and explosions, leading some to believe the nearby petrol station was involved. But Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the station was ‘unaffected’.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels, jets and an aerial platform to extinguish the fire. Crews remained on scene carrying out damping down operations.

The fire service explained: “Investigators were able to understand where the fire started and spread to, however the cause of the fire was undetermined.”

A spokesperson added that it was not aware of any injured parties”.

Meanwhile nearby Leagrave Primary, reported that "all of the children in school are safe and well".
