Luton Council was slammed as being “undemocratic” and showing a “lack of transparency” over proposals to build on the Green Belt east of the town.

No-one from the council was at a well-attended angry protest meeting held in Cockernoe on Tuesday.

Wignore resident Carolyn Cottier said: “We want to know why the council appears to have dropped plans for expansion to the west of Luton where there are good transport connections and other facilities.

“There’s been no public consultation and we suspect it’s a strategic move on their part, a tactic to let the plans slip through.

“If they do nothing, the government will award the land to the east as the preferred opion. This might even mean changing the Hertfordshire border. We are not happy.”

She added: “We’re now forming a cohesive local unit and will channel all our energy in the same direction.

“We’re a small group but we’re growing and we will do everything in our power to block this.”
