First no-stopping '˜Red Route' to be introduced in Luton this month

The trialled route will appear at Airport Way this month, from November 19.

A public consultation took place in May asking for views from residents and businesses on proposals to trial red routes along strategic routes in the town.

These areas included the town centre, Windmill Road, Kimpton Road and Airport Way as well as Marsh Road, Leagrave Road and Dunstable Road.

In August, the council’s executive gave approval to implement red routes on Airport Way in November and the town centre in January 2019 as a trial. After six months, councillors will then consider any objections and decide whether or not to continue with the scheme. Proposals for red routes on Kimpton, Marsh and Dunstable Roads have been put on hold while comments and feedback given as part of the consultation are considered.

Cllr Paul Castleman, portfolio holder for highways said: “No one likes to sit in traffic and the flow of vehicles in the town is significantly impacted by illegal and inconsiderate parking and we need measures to improve this. Our plan aims to minimise obstruction, improve safety as well as air quality and help support public transport and local businesses.

“Having the red routes in these areas as a test traffic regulation order allows us the flexibility to make minor changes once they are in place so we can make sure the restrictions best suit the local area”.

The proposals included a combination of double-red and single-red lines to mirror the existing yellow-line controls and create ‘no-stopping’ restricted routes. Existing parking and loading bays along the route will be maintained and additional facilities provided, where possible.
