Hatters hit out at ‘overzealous’ police

LUTON Town Football Club have criticised West Mercia Police for placing “overly severe” ticketing conditions on supporters ahead of the club’s opening game of the season away at Telford next week.

An English Defence League march scheduled to take place in Telford on the same day has already seen the fixture’s kick-off moved to 7.45pm and supporters also have to go through strict conditions for admission to the ground.

Fans will be given a receipt by Hatters ticket office staff and all supporters’ details will be recorded.

Supporters must then exchange the receipt for a ticket at a ‘rendezvous point’ off the M54 at 6pm on the day of the game before a free coach will transport them to the ground.

Hatters managing director Gary Sweet said: “I am sick and tired of Luton fans being pushed around in this way.

“Whether by overzealous policing from the inexperienced police forces of our hosting clubs or by ill-timed political demonstrations that seem to affect our club more than any other or, as in this case both, Luton supporters are always expected to walk over hot coals to support their team.

“At what point does the human right of a protestor or the apparent safety of the public become too great a risk to protect?

“I believe these arrangements will antagonise more than they resolve.”

Mr Sweet also encouraged Hatters fans to travel and support their side despite the ticketing conditions.
