Health and safety warning

HEALTH and safety chiefs have issued a fresh warning for caution at work after more than 1,100 people were seriously hurt while going about their job in Bedfordshire last year.

According to figures released by the Health and Safety Executive, 235 of the 1,123 injuries recorded across the county were considered to be major between April 2010 and March 2011 compared to 228 in the previous year.

888 workers suffered an injury or ill health that required them to take three days or more off work.

Simon Longbottom, HSE operation manager for the East of England, said: “These statistics highlight why we need good health and safety in British workplaces. Employers should spend their time tackling the real dangers that workers face rather than worrying about trivial risks or pointless paperwork.”
