PROTECT catalytic converters with new security measures – that’s the advice from Beds Police following a spate of thefts over the past year.

In the last 12 months there have been more than 50 reports of thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles, which are used to turn toxic exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines into non-toxic substances.

Beds Police are urging residents and businesses to invest in products to help reduce the threat of theft and increase the chances of recovery.

Acid etching kits will not prevent the converter from being removed but can act as a deterrent as the converters can be easily traced back to the original owner. Another product works by securing the converter to the vehicle making removal more difficult.

Det Con Mark Bryce of the serious complex crime team said: “Very simple measures can be taken by businesses and residents to reduce the risk of catalytic converters being stolen. Much like post-coding bicycles and using chemical DNA marking solutions on appliances, etching kits provide a great deterrent to potential thieves who are out to make a quick buck.

“Converter thefts have increased in recent months but by taking action early, residents and businesses can potentially save themselves a lot of money in the long run.”
