Lib Dems triumph in Wigmore by-election

The Liberal Democrats were the winners of the Wigmore by-election, it was announced today (April 11).

Alan Michael Skepelhorn of Hitchin Road is the new councillor for the Wigmore ward of Luton Borough Council after the death of fellow Lib Dem Councillor Roy Davies in February.

Councillor Skepelhorn lost his Round Green seat in May 2011 after eight years of service, and today won the Wigmore post with 47 per cent of the 2099 votes cast.

He beat both Labour and Conservative candidates who received 24 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

The UKIP candidate Lance Andrew Richardson came 4th with 11 per cent of the votes.

At full strength the council has 48 members representing 19 wards, and there are currently 36 Labour, seven Liberal Democrat and four Conservative councillors.
