Lobbying for cancer research

LUTON civil servant Elizabeth Bailey has a new string to her bow - she’s become an ambassador for Cancer Research UK since being diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

The mother-of-two has already appeared in a video speaking about her experience and last week she delivered a petition to Downing Street on behalf of the charity.

Elizabeth, 47, of Hitchin Road said: “I saw on their website they were looking for people to lobby parliament and thought it was something I could do because I’m a confident speaker.”

She was invited to become an ambassador and now keeps local MP Gavin Shuker updated on campaign priorities to make sure cancer research is high on his agenda.

“He’s been completely supportive,” she said.

“We’re also lobbying for less obvious point-of-sale displays in shops selling cigarettes.”

In addition Elizabeth is taking part in two major research programmes – Breakthrough Generations and another involving risk factors in cancer heredity where her DNA will be assessed alongside 15,000 others.
