Luton Girls Choir mourn secretary

A woman who played an intrinsic role in Luton's musical history has died.

Peggy Coggins was secretary to Luton Girls Choir founder Arthur Davies, who employed her in the same capacity at Dunns Seeds, where he was agricultural agent.

And although Peggy never sang in the famous Luton Girls Choir, she belonged to the Methodist Church choir and initially met Arthur at Luton Choral Society where he was the conductor.

According to former Luton Girls Choir member Margaret Hale-Owens, Peggy never looked back after joining Arthur in 1949.

She said: “Her job became her way of life. She travelled everywhere with us, arranging all the business aspects we well as organising the travel, staging and wardrobe, in addition to the day-to-day running of the agricultural agency.

“She rubbed shoulders with royalty, stars and celebrities but Peggy was never fazed, she was always in control and committed.”

Peggy, wo was born in Luton in 1920, was an active member of Luton Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society as well as the Vicwardians.

She worked in the Electoral Registration Office after Arthur died and would cycle into town from her home in St Lawrence Avenue until she was well into her 80s.

Margaret added: “She was our friend and confidante and we will mourn her passing as our last link to a wonderful musical youth and fellowship.”
