Makeshift pouch for little Pip

MOST women have handbags packed to the rims with everyday essentials. But Whipsnade Zoo keeper Alex Pinnell has something unusual in her rucksack – a bouncing baby wallaby.

Alex has taken charge of the orphaned joey, who was abandoned by her mother.

The 29-year-old is hand-rearing the miniature marsupial, called Pip, and is using her rucksack as a makeshift pouch.

Alex, who works on the farm section and with the sea lions, keeps Pip with her during the day, and feeds her every four hours.

The seven-month-old wallaby will be looked after by Alex for the next few months. After that, she will live on the zoo’s Children’s Farm, where visitors will be able to see her hopping around with the other free roamers. She is adorable but exhausting,” said Alex. “Luckily she is starting to sleep through at night now and is very good at taking her bottle.”
