Man lifted to safety after falling 100ft into Sundon Chalk Quarry

A man was rescued after falling 100 feet into Sundon Chalk Quarry yesterday (Tuesday) evening.

Emergency services were alerted to the accident at the disused put in Upper Sundon during the early evening.

A Beds Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Crews was sent to reports that somebody had fallen from a height into the quarry.

"On arrival, we located the casualty who had fallen 100 feet. We worked alongside colleagues from East of England Ambulance, East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity, Hazardous Area Response Team, Bedfordshire Police and the technical rescue unit from Dunstable Community Fire Station.

"Firefighters used a rope system to hoist the casualty back up to an area where the casualty could be given medical treatment by advanced paramedics and doctors.

"Shortly afterwards, the casualty was airlifted to hospital."

The service used the 'what3words' smart app to help find the man at the bottom of the pit, which was crucial in saving time.

Bedfordshire Police added: "All emergency services have now been stood down from Sundon Pits following an incident this evening. One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and all police enquiries have concluded."
