Man's leg amputated after Luton driver mounts kerb

The collision happened on October 29 last year after 21-year-old Thamilarasy Jeyavinthan lost control of her car.

Appearing at Luton Magistrates Court yesterday, Jeyavinthan was allowed to keep her licence with six penalty points and a fine.

The court heard on October 29, the young woman was driving on Dallow Road without due care and attention.

Resident Mr Attiq was walking on the pavement as Jeyavinthan mounted it, hit him and collided into a wall.

Mr Attiq’s leg was subsequently amputated

In a victim impact statement, Mr Attiq said: “I used to love visiting friends and family, I can’t do these things any more.

“I feel like I’m a burden and an inconvenience. I can’t even get myself a drink ... because I’m immobile.

“I’m hoping things improve but I feel like a prisoner in my own home – stuck looking at four walls in my living room – day in day out. It’s very upsetting for my family.”

Representing herself, Jeyavinthan was asked by magistrates to explain how the accident happened.

She said: “On the day I was travelling with my brother, it had been raining and the road was slippery.

“It was like 30mph I was driving at. I was approaching the main roundabout, there was one car in front of me and it just went straight and I had to turn left.

“I braked and then turned left. I don’t know... I saw the man but tried to steer away but I couldn’t.

“I braked hard but I couldn’t control the car.”

Jeyavinthan wept before continuing.

She added: “I came out and tried to call the ambulance. A man was shouting, ‘he is dead’.”

The court heard Jeyavinthan is studying at university and working part-time as a cashier.

Magistrates imposed a fine of £150, court costs of £85, a £20 victim surcharge and six penalty points on her licence.
