Manshead in special measures after being hit with '˜inadequate' Ofsted rating

Manshead School has been placed into special measures after inspectors found shortcomings in teaching, management and outcomes for pupils.

A report of the November inspection, which was published on Monday, states that students make inadequate progress in English and Science as “too much teaching is ineffective”.

The school’s leadership is said to have not maintained high expectations of pupils’ achievement, as results have declined since the last Ofsted inspection in 2013.

The report adds that the Church of England school’s curriculum “does not adequately prepare pupils for life in modern Britain by promoting equality and diversity and developing their understanding of different cultures and traditions.”

In a letter to parents, headteacher Jim Parker has said he is “very disappointed” with the outcome of the inspection.

He added: “As you know in 2013, when Ofsted last inspected the school they judged us as ‘requires improvement’.

“In 2013 they identified a number of action points that the school should address.

“Although we have been successful in achieving many of these we have not made enough progress in improving attainment in English or in improving attainment for disadvantaged students.

“As a consequence Ofsted have judged the school’s provision to be Inadequate.”

Parents and carers have been invited to a meeting at the school on Thursday evening, during which Mr Parker and the school’s governors will outline plans for improvement.

Ofsted has put together a list of areas which Manshead needs to work on.

It has also recommended that external reviews of the school’s governance and use of the pupil premium are undertaken, to assess how Manshead’s “leadership and management may be improved.”
