Material error sees bridleway closed for repair

Bridleway path, Crawley Green Road, is closed

Doreen Steinberg, of Luton, questioned the council’s construction methods after the pathway was closed, only a few weeks after it had been finished.

She said: “Two years ago the council constructed a composition path at the beginning and end of this area leaving a large central part in the original muddy and uneven state.

“In July the council completed the central area of the path.

“After less than four weeks, the council has erected signs at either end of the new section saying that it is closed.

“This followed a complaint by a resident stating that there were loose shards of glass covering the whole length of the new area.

“There is enough broken glass around Luton and other towns without the council adding this dangerous expensive hazard.

Luton Borough Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the mistake.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Unfortunately the contractor working on the bridleway was supplied with incorrect material.

“Once this was realised the bridleway was closed.

“We anticipate that remedial work will be completed early next week.

“The council apologises for any inconvenience caused by this situation.”

Doreen added: “How much will it cost to rectify this?

“How long will horses and the general public be banned from this area?”
