MP visits Luton care home

Staff and residents at Advance UK's supported housing scheme invited Gavin Shuker MP to have a look around the care home.

Gavin spent time speaking with the residents and staff to find out more about how the organisation supports local people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions.

The visit follows the housing provider receiving ‘good’ ratings from the Care Quality Commission at five care homes.

Bertha Kamuna, Advance UK’s service manager in Luton, said: “Our customers were all thrilled to receive a visit from Gavin, who showed genuine interest in hearing how our customers’ lives have been improved by living in our supported housing. It was a fantastic opportunity to tell Gavin about our work, and update him on how we are developing our services in Luton.”

Julie Layton, Advance’s chief executive highlighted the challenges facing the supported housing sector.

She said: “The Government is in the process of reviewing how supported housing is funded, and it is vital that it puts in place a sustainable funding model, to enable vulnerable people to live in homes that are appropriate for their needs.”
