New funding boost for the A5 northern bypass

PLANS for the A5 Dunstable northern bypass have been given a £5 million boost.

For Central Beds Council has decided to set aside that sum to help pay for the scheme, out of a special pot of government funding.

The council will take the cash from the ‘growth area funding’ kitty.

It is a type of government support linked to the planned housing growth in the area.

Now that portion will go to the Highways Agency as part of the council’s contribution to the planned new road.

The idea was approved by the council’s executive committee on Tuesday, December 7.

The government announced in October that the vital road project could continue.

A public inquiry is still to be held into the scheme.
