An ward-winning mental health trust has become the first NHS trust in the country to run the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

East London Foundation NHS Trust (ELFT) will use the scheme to support clients of the Bedfordshire and Luton Mental Health and Wellbeing Services.

Spokesman Steve Muggridge said: “I’m really excited about this project. We see it as a fantastic opportunity that will help build confidence and improve physical fitness while providing clear goals.

“This can only benefit young people looking to regain a sense of structure and hopefully further their education or find work.

“It will be open to everyone – we won’t exclude anyone.”

Training will be provided to those using ELFT services but it will also be promoted with inpatients as part of their recovery plan.

The DofE is open to young people aged 16 to 24.
