A double tragedy hit a Luton familythis week. John and Sarah Ann Weedon of Wimbourne Road, heard their son Horace, aged 22, of the Grenadier Guards had been killed in battle on September 14.

And on Monday their 11-year-old son Frank, died of diptheria.

They have two other sons, Jack and George, who are also on the front line.

Mrs Allen of Jubilee Street. Luton, received an interesting letter from her brother Pt Sydney Daller of the British Expeditionary Force, who wrote: “I have seen some marvellous sights out here and when I come home I will have something to tell you. We are right in the firing line and have been ever since I have been out here.”

The management committee of the Luton Bute Hospital heard 142 members of the territorial army had been treated there in the past three months, out of 209 patients treated overall. 49 admissions were from accidents.
