Riding on his noble steed and sporting his shining armour, St George’s attempts to slay the fearsome dragon was the highlight of the festival.

The event also celebrated the 950th year of the Battle of Hastings with a troop of Norman soldiers preparing to conquer.

English Heritage Event Manager Debbie Houldsworth said : “Whether you love our patron saint, are intrigued by learning more about England’s story, or are simply looking for a great day out for the whole family, there was plenty going on at St George’s Day Festival this year.

“ This showpiece weekend is the perfect place to see 2000 years of history in action, with spellbinding shows, explosive displays, hands-on activities and much more!”

Hundreds children enjoyed the day, wielding swords and taking their best shots with long bows and arrows.
