Help an older person survive

Older people are being given support throughout the colder months by Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation (BLCF), which launched its Surviving Winter 2012 appeal this week.

People will be receiving their Winter Fuel Payments over the next few days, which many feel they don’t need, so BLCF colelcts and distributes donations to vulnerable older people.

If you are not fuel-poor, you can help an older vulnerable person survive this winter by donating at www.survingwinter.org.uk or by cheque. to BLCF.

Mark West, BCLF Chief Executive said: “Winter is a dangerous time for our older people. Over 21 per cent of households in the area are in fuel poverty - up from 16 per cent in 2009. Around half of those include somebody over 60. Fuel poverty causes serious health problems including heart attacks and strokes. It’s thought that there are around 250 extra deaths across Bedfordshire and Luton in winter each year – the majority of them older people.

“We also want to tackle the problem of isolation among older people during winter. Older people can become more cut off and struggle to leave the house in the colder months. Last year we helped over 1,000 people through our Surviving Winter campaign, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We provided help such as food parcels, warm clothing and draft proofing of homes.

“If you are not fuel-poor, think about donating some or all of your Winter Fuel Payment. You could help an older person to survive this winter. You can donate at www.survivingwinter.org.uk or by cheque direct to the Foundation. Any money you donate will be spent locally.”
