Houghton Regis mum takes on 25 million metre challenge for CRY in memory of her son

A mum from Houghton Regis is taking on the 25 million metre challenge for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in memory of her son.

Sarah Pyatt lost her son Jake Gallagher in 2013 after he suffered from a cardiac arrest at the age of 16, ever since she has been on a mission to raise awareness of these heart conditions and ensure that schools in Bedfordshire are equipped with defibrillators.

Every year Sarah raises money for SADS UK, but with the coronavirus pandemic putting a stop to traditional fundraising ideas she had to think of something new.

She said: "So far I have raised close to £15,000 for SADS UK for defibrillators, this year as Jake's anniversary approaches I will be taking part in the 25 million metre challenge for CRY, another charity close to my heart.

"I came across the charity when Jake was on the life support machine the hospital gave me a leaflet from the charity.

"It was through them I researched heart conditions and they urged me to get the whole family screened.

"So I will be walking 50 miles until Jake's anniversary on April 12."

Cardiac Risk in the Young has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death. The charity supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by young sudden cardiac death.
