Luton Borough Council receives £99k grant to employ heritage enabler to explore town's 'unique history'

The council will recruit a 'heritage enabler' to develop its heritage strategy and coordinate activity across the town.

This heritage enabler will also organise a series of open day events, designed to showcase Luton’s history stemming from the Middle Ages to the present day.

In addition, funding will be provided for community-based projects to promote understanding of heritage from all parts of the town.

Cllr Paul Castleman, portfolio holder for planning and transport, said the council was "delighted" to receive the National Lottery grant.

He said: “Luton has a rich and unique heritage, reflecting the industrial history of the town from hat-making to motor manufacturing as well as the experiences of our diverse communities.

"This funding will help us to build on the outstanding work of existing organisations to increase participation and understanding throughout our town.”

The project will run from spring 2020 until 2021 and will create a number of opportunities for residents.

These will include the chance to participate in heritage related projects, consultations and other volunteering opportunities.

Community groups will also have the opportunity to bid for funding to run their own projects to promote participation and understanding of heritage.
