Mick Dillon, 53, took over the reins of the charity in 2017 and helped steer it through difficult years of austerity and more recently, the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Dillon, who lived in Houghton Regis, had a rare hereditary neurological condition - spinal muscular atrophy - and was a registered architect.

As a wheelchair-user, Mr Dillon was an expert on disability and charity issues, built on years of knowledge and personal experience. He ran The Disability Resource Centre in Dunstable for 15 years before taking over the leadership of the Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Mr Dillon was also "passionate about equality" and giving people choice over matters important to them and their future.

A Luton Borough Council spokesman said: "Mick made a great contribution to the lives of many people in Luton and in so many ways. Among this he championed the cause of disability rights and served as an Inclusive Growth Commissioner.

"Mick worked in partnership with the council over many years. His passing is a huge loss to the town. The thoughts of everyone at Luton Council are with Mick’s family, friends and many past and present colleagues."

Three Counties Radio presenter Roberto Perrone tweeted: "Terribly sad and shocking news about Mick Dillon. I am speechless at the news of his passing. Condolences to his family & friends. Mick will leave a huge void."

Deputy leader of Luton Borough Council, Cllr Sian Timoney tweeted: "Such dreadfully sad news. Mick was a brilliant commissioner on the Inclusive Growth Commission helping to produce a plan to ensure all residents in Luton benefit from strategic and economic growth. RIP Mick Dillon."
