Wallaby spotted in Hertfordshire could be from Whipsnade Zoo

A wallaby native to Australia has been filmed hopping around Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, with some speculating it could be linked to some which escaped from Whipsnade Zoo.

The animal was seen on a country lane by a resident of Berkhamsted at 7:30pm on Wednesday (15/4).

The man, who does not want to be named, was driving to collect his wife from the hairdresser when he spotted the marsupial ahead of him.

In disbelief he stopped the car and watched until a runner spooked the creature and it hopped off. But he spotted it again on the way home, minutes later, and took a video as it went to explore a nearby garden.

The video shows the three-foot high creature hop down the driveway.

The resident said: "I honestly couldn't believe it. "I wondered if something had been put in the coffee I'd bought earlier.

"I was certain nobody would believe me."

The wallaby, which is like a small kangaroo, is thought to be part of a population that once escaped from nearby Whipsnade Zoo - but this hasn't been confirmed.

Villagers have become protective of it, said the resident.

He said: "People are saying they're driving more carefully now, and there's even talk of making a special 'wallaby crossing' sign.

"There's a general feeling that this is great and we're all going to look out for it."
