Warning over taking paddle or swim in Bedfordshire’s open waters

Renewed warnings of swimming in open waters has been issued by Beds Fire & Rescue Service.

The fire service issued its warning yesterday (May 27), saying that despite record-breaking May temperatures over the bank holiday weekend, open water remains dangerously cold.

It also states knowing how to float to live could save your life warning of the dangers of heading out for a paddle or swim this half term.

The water safety message follows reports of this week’s heatwave resulting in tragic incidents across the country involving five young boys drowning in open water. BFRS states: “Remember that even in hot weather, our lakes and rivers stay cold - cold enough to trigger cold water shock, an involuntary reaction that can affect anyone - no matter your age, fitness or swimming ability. “Even during a heatwave, Bedfordshire’s waters can still be cold enough to cause it. “The first 90 seconds are the most dangerous, so staying calm is vital. “If you get into difficulty, remember to FLOAT.”
