They hope to hold about eight fundraising football events throughout the summer – kicking off with an event on August Bank Holiday Monday – and they’re recruiting.

Spokesman Michael Malone, 20, said: “We’re looking for players with some form of previous experience – Sunday league, regular five-a-side with mates, that sort of thing – and we train twice a week.

“On Wednesdays it’s at Markyate Cricket and Football Club and on Sundays we’re on the grass next to Lea Manor Recreation Centre.”

Prospective players will be supplied with kit and there’s a one-off £25 registration fee, with each game or training session costing £3 a player.

Michael, who’s been coaching since he was 13 and is studying sports science at the University of Bedforshire, said: “I’ve witnessed what charities like Macmillan do first hand – my Dad has been diagnosed with cancer twice and they were a massive support. This our way of saying ‘Well done and keep up the good work.’”
