‘Please respect others’ feelings’

NEIGHBOURHOOD bobbies across Bedfordshire will be targeting anti-social behaviour over Halloween and bonfire night.

Bedfordshire Police say that while they do not want to spoil people’s fun, Halloween does not give an excuse for anti-social behaviour and acts of vandalism.

The force says it still gets complaints about Halloween pranks going too far, such as eggs and flour being thrown at properties and residents, particularly the elderly, feeling intimidated by large groups of noisy trick-or-treaters calling at their homes.

Traditionally, complaints increase around bonfire night when children and older youths let fireworks off in the street, putting themselves and motorists in danger and causing alarm for residents and pets.

Crime Reduction Officer, PC Jon Shiels, said: “If you are going trick or treating, follow the safety advice. Please remember that some people, especially the elderly, may be frightened by groups of people knocking at their door and respect any homes displaying a ‘No Trick or Treat’ sign.

“Children should be reminded never to dabble with fireworks and traders should ensure staff are familiar with the legislation and they do not sell to the under 18s.”

By law, no-one under 18 should posses fireworks in a public place and it is a criminal offence to supply or sell fireworks to a person under 18.
