Police Authority welcomes drop in Bedfordshire crime

BEDFORDSHIRE Police Authority has welcomed news that crime in the county fell by four per cent in April and May compared to the same period last year.

A two-month performance snapshot reveals 277 fewer crimes were recorded, below the county’s average for the past five years and close to a five-year low.

The report, presented to members of Bedfordshire Police Authority’s Performance Scrutiny Committee, also show a 12 per cent reduction in anti-social behaviour.

There were also three fewer victims of burglary per day in the county in the first two months of the year following a 23 per cent drop in these offences compared to the same time last year.

Meanwhile, the Force’s burglary detection rate continued to improve and is close to the force’s target of 17%. This enabled the Force to improve its national ranking for burglary detections by three places to 33rd.

Penny Fletcher, chairman of the committee, said: “These figures provide early promise that Bedfordshire Police is maintaining the performance uplift seen in the last six months of the previous year. We hope the strong start made to date foretells further rapid progress for the county so that we can make our communities safer as well as strengthen the Force’s position in national rankings.”
