'2040 vision' is the project by Luton Borough Council which aims to stamp out poverty in the town by 2040.

Last year, Luton had one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country, and an estimated 33 per cent of households below a decent standard of living.

Since then, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on the town and its residents.

Luton residents can complete an online survey here until August 25, to highlight their priorities for the town moving forward.

Early analysis suggests that lower earners are at greater risk of job losses, with more residents and families at risk of falling into poverty.

The pandemic has also had a disproportionate impact on the most deprived groups and those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups.

The council's vision for the next three years has five major priorities:

> Protect the most vulnerable in our town by prioritising services that tackle poverty and health inequalities;

> Make Luton a "child-friendly" town, where young people grow up feeling safe and secure;

> Secure a strong economic recovery from Covid-19;

> Reduce emissions to be a carbon neutral town by 2040;

> Work with communities to encourage residents to be active, engaged and socially responsible.

Cllr Hazel Simmons, leader of Luton Borough Council, said: ”Our vision for Luton 2040 is of a town built on fairness, where our residents can reach their full potential and our strong and diverse community can support all our people to enjoy a good quality of life.

"Luton will be a vibrant, resilient and sustainable town where we work together to ensure no-one has to live in poverty.

“This vision has become even more important following the impact of Covid-19 on our local economy and the wellbeing of our population.

"Luton has gone through some of the biggest challenges it has ever faced."
