Five year plan aims to protect spirit of area

Working with others to help develop the local economy, helping people to stay healthy and independent, building strong communities and providing quality services that deliver value for money are some of the key ambitions in a new five-year plan that is being debated by Central Bedfordshire councillors.

The Council’s Executive, meeting on October 6 , has proposed a plan detailing its main areas of focus for the next five years.

James Jamieson, Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Good councils need to make sure they are serving residents well and we strive to do this. We also have a role in continuing to unlock the potential of individuals and local companies. So, as well as supporting schools to help children achieve, we are also focusing on life long skills and particularly helping people to get the jobs they want and that the local economy needs.”

Roads and transport are major concerns and the council is looking to build on the road improvements it has already made in the years ahead.

Major schemes such as the Woodside Link and A5/M1 Link Roads will open during the life of the plan and new developments such as the dualling of the A421 are also on the schedule.

“Central to our ambitions is our commitment to support people who are vulnerable, regardless of their age and for whatever reason.

“We will do what we can to support people to stay healthy and independent for as long as possible and will continue to provide or arrange care services for people who need more looking after,” said Cllr Jamieson.

The character and spirit of Central Bedfordshire are acknowledged by the council who recognise that these are the things that people love about living here.

“We want to preserve and encourage the community spirit that makes Central Bedfordshire the place it is, whilst looking to the future and making sure we have the homes, jobs and infrastructure that we and our children will undoubtedly need,” he added.

The plan will go forward to Full Council next month.
