The issue received national attention after Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford publicly called for the government to provide meals for children during the summer, leading to a groundswell of support.

Luton South MP Rachel Hopkins was among scores of politicians who wrote to the Education Secretary yesterday, demanding the government change its course.

Today, it was announced 1.3million children currently claiming free school meals will eligible for food vouchers in a scheme lasting six weeks.

MP Rachel Hopkins said: "The Covid-19 crisis has had a severe impact on parents’ incomes, and charities and food banks are struggling to provide the same level of holiday support due to increased service pressures.

"Luton is particularly exposed to the economic impact of coronavirus and needs increased support to protect local people from poverty.

"Children should be focusing on catching up on their education, not worrying about when their next meal is."

A Downing Street spokesman said earlier today that children currently receiving free school meals will continue to do so.

He added: "The PM fully understands the issue facing families across the UK during what is a difficult and unprecedented time."
