Renaissance of Houghton park gets underway

Landscape restoration works have started on the £3million Houghton Hall Park Renaissance and Renewal Project.

The Renaissance and Renewal Project, which is a partnership between Central Bedfordshire Council and Houghton Regis Town Council, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery, aims to restore the vitality of the park, celebrating local heritage and improving visitor facilities to meet the needs of a growing local community.

The landscape restoration works are being undertaken by The Landscape Group who have significant experience of working on similar historic parks. The works at Houghton Hall Park include tree works and woodland management; restoration of the walls of the walled garden; the creation of a new formal garden; installing new estate type fencing, gateways and pathways and preparatory works for a new play trail.

During the works there will be volunteering opportunities for the local community and the Friends of Houghton Hall Park to be involved in the works and to learn more about their local park and its wildlife.

Cllr Brian Spurr, Executive member for Community Services, said: “We are very pleased that works are now underway on this exciting project to improve Houghton Hall Park and protect it for future generations.

“Houghton Hall Park is a key legacy project with real economic impact in terms of employment and developing assets. With increased pressure from population growth, the project also offers premium green space, with history and heritage, of lasting benefit to current and future residents. We’re delighted to be able to deliver a leisure facility that will be used by residents and future generations.”

Caroline Romans, Houghton Hall Park Project Manager, said: “We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund, Central Bedfordshire Council and Houghton Regis Town Council for enabling these works to take place. Whilst the works are taking place, the majority of the park will remain open to the public. We hope that visitors will appreciate the improvements that are being made to the park to make it a more attractive place for all to visit.”
