Teen shows crime doesn’t pay

The 14 year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a 12-month Youth Rehabilitiation Order (YRO) by Luton Youth Court on July 10 following a string of theft and robbery offences.

Nine days later, he was arrested for another offence in Grove Road in Luton, resulting in his YRO being revoked, him being sentenced for all previous offences and sent to Secure Accommodation for 16 months.

DI Nick Bellingham from Bedfordshire Police said: “Young people need to be aware that crime is not tolerated in Bedfordshire, especially street crime. Some think stealing phones, cash or personal items from others is not serious, but if someone hands over their property because they fear the consequences, the outcome for the offender is often custody, as this is a robbery.

“The force has already run a successful bus advert campaign which makes offenders feel less assured and our aim has always been to put the fear of crime back onto them instead of the community.

“Seeing pictures of local offenders publicised in this way has made them and their associates feel uncomfortable and this message goes out to youngsters as well.

“We want everyone to enjoy their summer holidays, but don’t end up ruining it by picking up a criminal record.”

Bedfordshire Police wants youngsters to be aware that crime is dealt with extremely serious throughout the county and custodial sentences could be the outcome for those that consistently offend.
